Week 2: Due Thursday, September 12

Test your knowledge of this past week's vocab homework by identifying which word (slant rhyme, assonance, ballad, sonnet) fits each of the following entries. There are five entries, so one word will be used more than once. Also, one entry may have more than one answer!!! Don't forget your answers should also explain why.  No cheating!!!

Number 1
11.      Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests; snug as a gun

        Number 2
22.      Fountain, coolest fountain,
Cool fountain of love,
Where all the sweet birds come
For comforting-but one,
A widow turtledove,
Sadly sorrowing,
At once the nightingale,
That wicked bird, came by,
And spoke these honied words:
"My lady, if you will,
I shall be your slave."
"You are my enemy:
Begone, you are not true!"
Green boughs no longer rest me,
Nor any budding grove.
Clear springs, where there are such,
Turn muddy at my touch.
I want no spouse to love
Nor any children either.
I forego that pleasure and their comfort too.
No, leave me; you are false
And wicked-vile, untrue!
I'll never be your mistress!
I'll never marry you!

Number 3
33.      Ascend from childhood and become independent.
He measured his weight and also his height.
She kept the letter, but accidentally dropped it later.

N.    Number 4
44.      As spring did pass into summer’s full bloom
To stand with arms outstretched in seasons all
As the seasons knit like the weaving loom
Through the cold of winter, strong through to fall

Its strength and character for eons stand
The unkindest cut that will ever be
To not love and support this tree so grand
And not to kindly prune the fruiting tree.

The strength of sweeping boughs as arms held wide
My heart grows secure within those limbs strong
As arms strong, my dreams to be held inside
Standing folded in your boughs is not wrong

Number 5
55.      As a strong longing to be my fruit tree
I beg of nature that you fruit with me

    2. 11.Assonance because I noticed a repetition of the vowel U as it is used in thumb, sung, an gun.

22.Ballad because it reminded me of song in which the person does not want to fall in love.

33.Slant rhyme because height and weight nearly rhyme.

44.Sonnet because I noticed a rhyme scheme that follows in abab.

55.Slant rhyme because I noticed rhyming from the last word in each line like tree and me.

  4. 1) Both slant rhyme and assonance. The words gun and thumb makes this a slant rhyme because they appear to the eyes as if they rhyme but they do not rhyme. It's an assonance because the vowel sound "u" is constantly being used.

    2) it's an assonance poem because the vowel sound "o" is almost being used throughout the entire poem.

    3) Slant rhyme. Because of the words height and weight. The two words looks as if they rhyme, but they do not .

    4) Sonnet. Because it have a rhyme scheme of abab which makes this a sonnet poem.

    5) Assonance. Because the vowel sound "o" is being used a lot in the first line.

2.) Ballad- It tells a story and almost every three or four lines flow with the same pattern.
3.)Slant rhyme- When I read it, it sounds like a stress at the beginning of a few words such as the words measured, letter, and later.
4.) Sonnet- It flows like a song because of the rhyme scheme and it also is a complete ideas that makes sense.
5.) Assonance- the "o" and the "e" sound are repeated in the words strong and longing; be, tree, and me.

  13. 1. An assonance because of the vowel sounds in thumb and gun. I also feel like it could be a slant rhyme because snug doesn't fully rhyme with the other two. 2. A ballad because it is narrating a story. 3. Slant rhyme because of words like letter and later and height and weight. 4. I'm somewhat skeptical about sonnet because my definition says it consists of 14 lines and the above poem only has 12. It also has the rhyme scheme abab. 5. Assonance because of the eevowel sounds in tree and me and long and strong.
